THE IX LAWS BRAND
The brand story is really the story of me, Shatavia, as a creator. I started kinda late--19--compared to the filmmakers I admire. Then, I wanted to make films that looked like a pop-up book and then I discovered Wes Anderson. Pivot. Then I wanted to focus on stories about black people that I wanted to see, but never saw on TV. The genre I got married to for this was always comedy centered. Then I got to The Second City in Chicago and wanted to make comedy plus. Comedy plus fantasy. Comedy plus horror. Comedy plus action. Dramedy. I hadn't found my lane yet, still--at least not one that fully felt like home. Then, I took a break. Really, the pandemic gave me a break. And then I took a break. For a few years. And in that time I really figured out what was important to me and what I wanted to contribute to the world long term. That's when I landed on the core of my existence and the reason I've been able to walk on water: my faith.
My mission for IX Laws is to develop and produce faith-based content for young adults that transforms how they think about their relationship with God, demonstrates the true struggle with trying to live a godly life and allows them to collectively see their trials and triumphs on screen.
My belief is that being a Christian is hard because it requires a lot of self-reflection, accountability, character transformation and submission to a higher calling. Naturally, we want to do our own thing. And a relationship with God is at once universal and highly individualistic for Christians since we struggle with different things, need deliverance from different things and need our character transformed in different ways. Because of this, I want the IX Laws brand to strengthen and encourage disciples by creating content that acknowledges the validity of the Christian lifestyle, but doesn't sanitize the daily process in choosing Christ. Equally, it's also my belief that being a Christian isn't always a hard day and tears. There's nuance. There are ways to have fun that are in alignment with the lifestyle. That'll be shown too.
My vision is to grow into a powerhouse for Christian lifestyle media across all genres, media platforms and cultures.
Note: I want to reiterate this was not always the direction I was going in with my work, even though I've been Christian all my life. The earlier work that I've done is indicative of that. But faith-based is where I'm at and where I'm going.
